Fun things to do in Lake Tahoe...

Drive around the lake: A beautiful 72-mile drive, you can get maps and an audiocassette from the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce (530) 541-5255, or the Tahoe-Douglas Chamber of Commerce (775) 588-4591, to describe the highlights of this scenic trip.

Take a paddleboat cruise: There are two paddle wheelers: the MS Dixie II and the Tahoe Queen, glass bottom boats that offer scheduled cruises around the lake. Both boats leave from the south shore and to cruise Emerald Bay. There are also sunset dinner and dancing cruises in the evenings. Sailing cruises are also available through Woodwind Sailing Cruises (530) 542-2212 or (775) 588-3000.

Ride up to the sky: There are two trams in the area that you can ride into the mountains. The Heavenly Tram (gondola) takes you a mile up the mountain at South Lake Tahoe/Stateline for a breathtaking view of all of Lake Tahoe. On the deck, stop and enjoy the view at Café Blue and shop the Gondola Sports gift shop. When you reach the top, take a hike! There are three different routes to choose from, with hikes ranging from one to four miles long. You can grab a bite to eat or have a glass of wine at the Adventure Peak Grill, a full-service outdoor restaurant. Or challenge yourself with an exhilarating scramble up the 25-foot rock-climbing wall. Great fun for the kids… and adults too! (800) HEAVENLY.

Go on a sleigh ride: The Borges Family Carriage Rides are located across the street from Caesars Lake Tahoe. Each 35-minute ride is set in a winter wonderland and are pulled by beautiful 2,000 pound Belgium horses. There are five handmade sleighs that vary in size from the cozy two-seater to a festive twenty-passenger, and all are equipped with warm blankets. During the ride, your guide will share with you some of the amazing history of Lake Tahoe. (775) 588-2953, or (800) 726-RIDE.

Fly in a hot air balloon: Lake Tahoe Balloons offers the world’s only U. S. Coast Guard certified hot air balloon ride. At a height of approximately 8,000-10,000 feet above sea level, you’ll witness breathtaking, undisturbed views of the entire Lake Tahoe basin and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range including Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf Lake, Cascade Lake and the Desolation Wilderness. The 1-hour adventure also includes a deluxe continental breakfast, a champagne toast and special souvenir. (530) 544-1221.

Visit historical sites: A short walk from Emerald Bay State Park (south shore) is Vikingsholm, a reproduction of a Norwegian castle, built in 1928. Summer tours available. (530) 525-3345. You can also visit the old Tallac Resort, a 74-acre site dating back to the turn of the century. (530) 541 4975.

See a Shakespearian play: July and August bring Shakespeare to the lake, when the Foothill Theater Company of Nevada City puts on evening performances at the outdoor amphitheater at Sand Harbor State Park in Kings Beach (north shore)

Watch a firework show: 4th of July/Labor Day fireworks… It’s been called “the best fireworks show west of the Mississippi”, and Tahoe puts on a show twice a year! A good spot to catch the show is Nevada Beach (at the lake just beyond the Kahle Meadow between Stateline and Round Hill). We recommend parking at the Kahle Meadow parking area and taking a short walk to the beach, but get there early as parking is very limited.

Cheer on the Lake Tahoe marathon runners/walkers: The Lake Tahoe International Marathon takes place each year in October and “runs” from Commons Beach in Tahoe City to Pope Beach near South Lake Tahoe. The 2006 marathon is scheduled for October 1st. (530) 544-7095.

Get a facial and a massage: Want to be pampered? Ali Dickey, spa and skin care specialist with BeautiControl, and Nancy Gayner, Certified Massage Therapist, are available to do just that. Ali will give a 1-hour FREE facial and pampering session to all of you, our guests, and Nancy, at a special discounted rate, will give you a relaxing and soothing massage that will make you feel like jell-o when she’s through! Ali Dickey (530) 545-0909, Nancy Gayner, CMT (530) 545-0995.

Shop the Heavenly Village: Food, fashion and fun! Located one block south of Harrah’s Casino at Highway 50 and Heavenly Village Way, the Heavenly Village offers a wide variety of shopping, restaurants and attractions great for the whole family. See a movie at the new Heavenly Village Cinema, shop for fine art at world famous Wyland and Oh My Goddard Galleries, grab a bite to eat at Wolfgang Express Eatery or Cold Stone Creamery, and visit more than 40 other specialty shops. Enjoy the traditional Tahoe ambiance with distinct European village flair -- heated cobblestone sidewalks, wooden archways, covered walkways, open bonfire pits, clock tower, and more. (775) 265-2087.

Rent a movie: Visit Vicki and Donna at Round Hill Video in the Round Hill Shopping Center (212 Elks Point Road and Highway 50) for a rent-two-get-one-free video or game rental! (775) 588-8764.

Try your luck at the local casinos: Want to roll the dice? There are a number of casinos here in the South Lake area, the most popular being Caesars Tahoe, Harrah’s, Harvey’s and Horizon. Of course there’s the favorite among the locals, the Lakeside Inn. Don’t forget to practice your strategy with the blackjack, craps and roulette wheel in the downstairs game room bar.

See a show: The major casinos here in Lake Tahoe offer a variety of shows and other nightlife, from live bands (both local and famous) to magic shows to comedy, etc. For show information, call Caesars Tahoe (888) 829-7630, Harrah’s (775-588-6611), Harvey’s (775) 588-2411, or Horizon (800) 648-3322.

Watch the sunset at Cave Rock: One of the best places on the east shore to see the beautiful colors of the sunset. Sit and watch in awe as the sun sets behind the massive row of the western mountains of Lake Tahoe. Artists from all over the world have come to Tahoe to capture this breathtaking site. It is a sunset you will never forget. Cave Rock is located on the east shore of Lake Tahoe about 5 miles north of the state line.

Stop by the Visitor Center: This place has it all! If it’s happening in Lake Tahoe, the Visitor’s Center will know about it. They have information on many of Tahoe’s current events, including museums, parks, historical sites, restaurants and night life, sporting activities and much more. The Visitor’s Center is located in the Round Hill Shopping Center in Zephyr Cove across from the Safeway grocery store.
